The historic heart of the city is organised around Hight Street, Market Street and South Terrace. This area retains a superb colonial heritage, culminating in the beautiful Victorian market halls (1897) of Fremantle Markets, which are a must-see at weekends. To the west, The Esplanade, an immense carpet of lawn, marks the transition to the harbour and the beach.
